Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about converting scores to percentages.

Divide your score by the total possible points, then multiply by 100. Formula: (Score ÷ Total Points) × 100 = Percentage. For example, scoring 36 out of 40 = (36 ÷ 40) × 100 = 90%.
16 out of 20 as a percentage is 80% (B- on most grading scales). Calculation: (16 ÷ 20) × 100 = 80%.
7 out of 10 equals 70%, which is a C- on the standard US grading scale. It is a passing grade in most schools.
8 out of 10 = 80%, which is a B- grade. (8 ÷ 10) × 100 = 80%.
Most US high schools and colleges require a 60–70% to pass (a D or C grade). Many college courses require a 70% or higher (C) for credit toward a major. Check with your specific institution for their passing requirements.
On a basic calculator, enter fractions as division: type the numerator, press ÷, then the denominator, then =. So 3/4 → press 3 ÷ 4 = 0.75. On scientific calculators, look for a fraction button (often labeled a b/c or n/d) that lets you input fractions directly. On TI graphing calculators, type the division, press MATH → Frac to display the result as a fraction.
Use long division: divide the numerator by the denominator. For 3/8, divide 3.000 by 8 to get 0.375. Common ones worth memorizing: 1/2 = 0.5, 1/4 = 0.25, 3/4 = 0.75, 1/3 ≈ 0.333, 2/3 ≈ 0.667, 1/5 = 0.2, 1/8 = 0.125. Another trick: find an equivalent fraction with denominator 10, 100, or 1000 — for example 3/4 = 75/100 = 0.75.
On a TI-84: Press STAT → Edit, enter your data in L1, then press STAT → CALC → 1-Var Stats → select L1 → Enter. Look for σx (population std dev) or Sx (sample std dev). On a Casio fx-series: press MODE 2 (STAT), enter data, press SHIFT → STAT → Var → select σx or sx. For a class grade set, use sample standard deviation (Sx or s) since you're working with a sample of possible scores.

How to Use the Score Calculator

Enter the number of points you scored (X) and the total number of points possible (Y). The calculator instantly shows you the percentage and corresponding letter grade.

X out of Y Examples

Whether your teacher grades out of 20, 25, 30, 40, 50, or 100 — just enter both numbers. Common examples: 18/20 = 90% (A-), 36/40 = 90% (A-), 45/50 = 90% (A-). The math always works the same way.

Why Scores Don't Always Match Percentages Directly

If a test is worth 50 points and you scored 42, that's (42 ÷ 50) × 100 = 84%, not 42%. This score calculator handles the conversion for any combination of numbers.
