Frequently Asked Questions

Common grading chart questions.

On a 20-question test, an A (93%) requires 18.6 correct — so 19 correct (95%) earns an A. Missing only 1 question gives you 19/20 = 95% = A.
For a 70% passing grade: on a 10-question test = max 3 wrong; on a 20-question test = max 6 wrong; on a 25-question test = max 7 wrong; on a 30-question test = max 9 wrong; on a 50-question test = max 15 wrong.
Yes! As long as each question or problem is worth the same number of points, these charts work for any graded assignment. For unequal point values, use the Score Calculator instead.
Standard US grading scale: A = 93–100%, A- = 90–92%, B+ = 87–89%, B = 83–86%, B- = 80–82%, C+ = 77–79%, C = 73–76%, C- = 70–72%, D = 60–69%, F = below 60%. Some schools use a 10-point scale where A = 90–100%, B = 80–89%, etc.
On a 40-question test: A (93%) requires 38 correct (missing max 2). A- (90%) requires 36 correct (missing max 4). B (83%) requires 34 correct (missing max 6). Use the custom chart generator above — enter 40 questions to see the full score table.
Two common US systems: the 7-point scale (A = 93–100%, each grade spans 7 points) and the 10-point scale (A = 90–100%, each grade spans 10 points). Plus/minus grades are added by many colleges. Some international schools use 0–100 numeric grades or letter systems like O, A, B, C, D (India). The charts on this page use the standard 7-point US scale.
