Everything you need to know about dog years vs human years.

No — the 7:1 rule is a myth and significantly underestimates early dog aging. A 1-year-old dog is sexually mature and roughly equivalent to a 15-year-old human. The American Veterinary Medical Association uses: first year = 15 human years, second year = +9 more, then ~4–5 human years per dog year after that (varying by size).
Larger dogs grow faster and their bodies work harder to support more mass, leading to faster aging at the cellular level. Giant breeds like Great Danes may be considered senior by age 5–6 and rarely live past 10. Small breeds like Chihuahuas can remain active and healthy into their late teens.
Vet guidelines for "senior" status:
  • Small breeds (under 20 lbs): senior at 10+ years
  • Medium breeds (20–50 lbs): senior at 8+ years
  • Large breeds (50–90 lbs): senior at 7+ years
  • Giant breeds (90+ lbs): senior at 5–6 years
A 7-year-old dog is equivalent to approximately:
  • Small (under 20 lbs): ~44 human years
  • Medium (21–50 lbs): ~47 human years
  • Large (51–90 lbs): ~50 human years
  • Giant (90+ lbs): ~56 human years
Average lifespans: small breeds 12–16 years, medium 10–14 years, large 9–12 years, giant breeds 6–10 years. Mixed breeds tend to outlive purebreds of similar size due to greater genetic diversity (known as hybrid vigor).
